Editorial Review
Any fan of Microsoft, MSN, and Internet Explorer shouldn’t be browsing the internet without the Windows Live Toolbar. Naturally, the Windows Live toolbar is only available for download and use with the Internet Explorer browser.
Whereas the Internet Explorer browser has come a long way in offering security features and other tools that make surfing the web a more pleasurable experience, the Windows Live toolbar compliments the browser by making it an all-encompassing unit that enables the user to find what they want straight from the browser – provided what they want is offered by Microsoft.
The Windows Live toolbar features the Windows logo on the right side of the toolbar and has a dropdown box which enables the user to browse straight to Live.com, Windows’ search engine, access their mail, access the help menu, or access toolbar options.
Next on the Windows Live toolbar is the MSN search window that allows users to search all facets of the Windows Search database including web search, local search, news search, feeds search, and a “this site” search which enables a site-specific search of the website the user is currently visiting.
There are also buttons across the toolbar that are customizable. The default buttons consist of a “News” button that access MSNBC.com’s sections such as sports, stocks, business, technology & science, health and entertainment. There is another button that allows user to search Windows Live galleries for additional buttons, feeds, and options.
The MSN button brings the user to all areas offered by MSN: autos, careers, dating, games, shopping, travel, weather, money, news, etc.
One of the coolest features offered by the Windows Live toolbar is the Maps button that can look up addresses in relation to the user’s actual location, deliver maps, and give detailed driving directions.
The Windows Live toolbar rounds out the rest of it’s offerings with a “PC Health” button that monitors and searches for possible malicious software, a “Spaces” button that allows users to access their Windows Live account, MSN mail and messenger links, and an autofill function.
If you are a Microsoft buff that utilizes such services as Hotmail, Windows Live, and regularly use Internet Explorer then the Windows Live toolbar is an all-encompassing tool that you are sure to use a great deal. Windows has made it work well with the Internet Explorer toolbar and it gives the extra security features needed for safe browsing using Internet Explorer. However, if you are not a bug fan of Microsoft’s services and merely use the IE browser occasionally, there isn’t much need for the toolbar, as it has features that will simply clutter up your browser window.
