Editorial Review
Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking website that allows users to save and share with other del.icio.us users their favorite websites easily. Users tag websites that they find funny, informative, and functional and can search other users’ favorite sites using the sites robust tag system.
The del.icio.us toolbar enables Firefox browser users to quickly archive their sites with a small icon that sits next to the address bar. Adjacent to the del.icio.us tag button is the “My del.icio.us” that offers a hot link to the user’s personal favorite bookmarks. Additionally, “del.icio.us” appears next to Firefox’s “Help” button at the top of the browser. When this is clicked more options for the del.icio.us tool bar appear.
Installing the del.icio.us toolbar into the Firefox browser is easily done. After download, simply restart the Firefox browser and the del.icio.us buttons automatically appear.
The del.icio.us toolbar is simple to use as well. When the user comes across a website that they want to add to their favorites they simply click the “tag” button that prompts a smaller window to pop up. This window allows the user to input information about the site that they find important such as notes and tags. The URL and description fields are already filled in. While you probably don’t want to alter the URL field, the description field can be changed to the user’s liking. The notes field simply gives the user the opportunity to jot down information about the site such as perhaps why they found the site interesting in the first place. This is particularly handy as your del.icio.us catalogue of sites becomes larger.
Tags are social bookmarking and networking sites answer to complete searchability. By adding tags to del.icio.us favorited sites, users can cross-reference sites by their chosen criteria. For example, the web site digg.com may have the tags “technology,” “social networking,” and “news.”
By clicking the “del.icio.us” that resides beside Firefox’s “Help” at the top of the browser, the user is presented with more options. “Show related tags and users” enables users to see sites that other users have tagged with the same tags. So if you are currently at a site tagged “dogs,” clicking this option would allow you to see other “dog” related sites that other del.icio.us users have favorited. There are also shortcuts for your del.icio.us inbox, and your “For” folder, a place where other del.icio.us users may have tagged sites that they may have believed you would like.
