Editorial Review

Writing professionals, teachers, students, and virtually anyone else that wants to have the power of a dictionary and thesaurus at their fingertips while using their browser will appreciate the convenience and functionality of the Dictionary.com toolbar. The Dictionary toolbar is currently only available for download and use for Internet Explorer browser versions 5.0 or later. There is currently no information regarding a future Dictionary.com toolbar for use with the Firefox browser.

Downloading the Dictionary.com toolbar is relatively simple. Just click the download button and restart Internet Explorer and it is automatically installed. In some instances, the toolbar will not automatically install, but that is easily remedied by selecting the toolbar from “View” > “Toolbars” > “Dictionary.com.”

The left side of the Dictionary.com toolbar features a button link that sends the browser directly to Dictionary.com. Next to that is the lookup window. Simply type the query into the window and select “Dictionary Search” or “Thesaurus Search” and the Dictionary.com results will appear in the window.

The Dictionary.com toolbar also has a “Word of the Day” feature that allows users to learn a new or little-known word simply by selecting the button on the Dictionary.com toolbar.

The toolbar seemingly could offer more features than what it has, but the features it does boast work well. There is a lot of space left on the toolbar that is not currently used. One would think that the word lookup window could also search as a search window for one or more major search engines, bringing much more functionality to the Dictionary.com toolbar. The toolbar also lacks many of the standard toolbar options that come with other toolbars such as a popup blocker, highlighting function, and the ability to edit, delete, and add buttons.

Thought the Dictionary.com toolbar is a great idea, it’s not very well implemented. In fact, the entire premise of the toolbar – the ability to look up word definitions and synonyms right from the browser – can be implemented into another, more robust and more traditional toolbar that implements more standard features and perhaps even a search. Using the Dictionary.com toolbar side-by-side with one of the more traditional toolbars is probably space-prohibitive so unless you really need the convenience of having your definitions right at your fingertips when using Internet Explorer, the Dictionary.com toolbar is probably not worth the download.
