Editorial Review
An independent, third-party group of contributors have developed a plug-in for the Firefox browser that allows Wikipedia users to quickly search, edit, and otherwise contribute to the Wikipedia community. Wikipedia editors value the integrity of Wikipedia and edit entries to the best of their abilities to ensure that they are factually correct. The Wikipedia toolbar is not currently available for Firefox 2.0 or the Internet Explorer browsers.
Wikipedia has become one of the most beloved projects of the internet of all time. Founded by Jimmy Wales, an internet entrepreneur, in 2001, Wikipedia now boasts more than seven million articles written in more than 250 languages. The primary appeal of Wikipedia is that anyone with an internet connection is able to add, edit, and delete articles and entries according to their area of expertise. The result is a surprisingly accurate reference source that has grown into an amorphous entity that grows each day.
Since the Wikipedia toolbar doesn’t currently work with the Firefox 2.0 platform, a temporary workaround has been developed. In order for it to work, however, the Wikipedia toolbar must have been installed on a previous release of Firefox and then the Firefox updated to version 2.0. If you currently use Firefox 2.0 you must delete that install, install a previous version of Firefox, download the Wikipedia toolbar, update back to Firefox 2.0, and then implement the workaround. Sound confusing? Well, to be honest it is. And it’s probably not worth the effort in the first place.
While the premise of being able to search and edit Wikipedia “on the fly” may seem tempting, unless you are one of the most prevalent users of the medium, you probably won’t use the Wikipedia toolbar enough to warrant having it, much less going through the trouble of installing it after you already have Firefox 2.0.
The Wikipedia toolbar interface is straight-forward and has a lot of functionality for Wikipedia use, but doesn’t offer any traditional browser toolbar options you would expect to find. So if you expected a toolbar with features such as traditional search engine support, search highlighting, and pop up blocker with the Wikipedia toolbar, you’re out of luck.
Finally, support for the Wikipedia toolbar is nothing short of lacking. As of this writing, Firefox 2.0 has been available for months, but there is no news as to whether there is a planned release of the Wikipedia toolbar for the latest release of Firefox or not. This uncertainty is compounded by the fact that the entire group of developers is comprised of volunteers.
